Hot Fuzz (2007)
Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Timothy Dalton and Jim Broadbent
Directed By: Edgar Wright
Running Time: 121 Minutes

So finally, here it is. The return to the big screen of Pegg/Wright and Frost and it was sure worth the wait. Their back catalogue of work is untarnished. The dabbles into TV and film have gained them nothing but praise from fans and critics the world over. Crossing genre's seems easy for them and your sure of many a laugh in whatever style of film they wish to parody.

They have done the zom-com now they turn their attention to the crime mystery/buddy cop film with superb results.

So, Pegg plays Nicholas Angel who is London's finest cop, his arrest record is 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He’s so good; he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel’s superiors (cameo's from Steve Coogan, Bill Nighy and Martin Freeman) send him to a place where his talents won’t be quite so embarrassing, the quiet and sleepy village of Sandford. Angel find's it hard to relax from his work especially in the seemingly crime-free village he has just moved to.

Once there, he is partnered with the well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman (Nick Frost). The son of amiable Police Chief Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent), Danny is a huge action movie fan and believes his new big-city partner might just be a real-life "bad boy," and his chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases he so longs for. Angel is quick to dismiss this as childish fantasy and Danny’s puppy-like enthusiasm only adds to Angel’s growing frustration. However, as a series of grisly accidents rocks the village, Angel is convinced that Sandford is not what it seems and as the intrigue deepens, Danny’s dreams of explosive, high-octane, car-chasing, gun fighting, all-out action seem more and more like a reality.

The cast of regular Brit-flick buddies cram this film with talent, everyone from Bill Bailey to Adam Buxton (and apparently Kate Blanchett as Angel's masked ex-girlfriend) show up somewhere along the way. Pegg's performance is once again, brilliant. He plays the down on his luck everyman to perfection and Frost is great as the loveable sidekick. But the real scene-stealer is former Bond, Sir Timothy of Dalton OBE. He plays the slimy eccentric super market owner with sheer class and determination. His comedy timing is spot on and the character really helps move the story along. Hats off to Timmy!

SJ favourite Paddy Considine also contributes to the comedy talent on display by giving a great double act performance with Rafe Spall, they play of each other really well as the childish know it all DC's.

Some stand out scene's in the film for me include the Point Break reference, the teen's in the pub and Frost's line "You ain’t seen Bad Boys 2?" which had me chuckling like a loon for a few minutes. Great delivery.

So a fantastic film worthy of the wait, highly recommended from us here at SJ. It is released in UK on the 14th and in the US some time in April - catch it while you can!

I've still not caught Hot Fuzz and this is the first review I've read as I try not to read too much until after the film. From what I've heard by word of mouth I prob wouldn't watch it, but since you've said it's really worthwhile Padz I shall do just that.
